Common Water Heater Problems
Ah, that wondrous appliance – your storage-tank water heater. Sturdy and dependable, it does its job day in and day out. Until one day it doesn’t.
Maybe the death knell rings suddenly, or maybe there are warning signs indicating the need for an inspection (at least) and perhaps some repair work to keep it in action for at least a while longer. To help prevent or delay a total shut down, here are problem symptoms to look for in your home:
- If the water temperature appears to be dropping or you’re experiencing lower than normal water pressure, you might have a broken or faulty dip tube. Dip tubes serve to separate incoming cold water from hot water. Over time, they can break or crumble, resulting in tepid vs. hot water. Dip tubes can easily be replaced.
- Another cause of hot water turned cold is a broken thermostat – usually an easy fix.
- If you notice water leaking or pooling up around the base of the storage tank, call a professional right away. Large or small, leaks are never good, and indicate that internal corrosion is taking its toll.
- Banging, clanking, or the sound of boiling water all point to a build-up of sediment at the bottom of the tank. Excessive build-up will decrease water storage capacity and can affect the taste and safety of your water.
Some people wait until the bitter end before replacing their water heater, while others don’t want the hassle of being without hot water even for a day. So, if your water heater is under-performing – or not performing at all – now is a great time to contact the water heater specialists at Best Choice Plumbers. We look forward to your call.
It’s wonderful that you said that a water heater’s dip tube can be easily replaced. I was considering that I should have this fixed since it’s already winter time, and I’m tired of having to heat up water from a kettle to fill my bathtub just so I can have some warm water to bathe in. Maybe I should call someone to come over and have them fix it for me since I don’t want to buy a new heater soon.
