Household Items You Should Sanitize

Washing your hands with soap and warm water is essential to stopping the spread of germs and viruses. But in a way, that action step is counter-productive if you don’t also sanitize items you and your family touch every day.

These are just some of the items you’ll want to keep as germ-free as possible.

Cabinet Knobs and Pulls – How many times a day do you open a cabinet door or drawer? Too many to count, we bet. Keep germs at bay by wiping down all knobs and pulls with a disinfectant wipe or a damp cloth and all-purpose cleaner.

Doorknobs – Doorknobs on exterior, bedroom, closet, home office, and bathroom doors should be sanitized regularly. Don’t forget the door to your shed, garage, and basement.

House Keys and Key Fobs – Your keys go everywhere you go. And they pick up a lot of germs along the way. Avoid plopping them down on a table or kitchen counter. Instead, wash keys in the sink with soap and warm water, wipe down key fobs with a disinfectant wipe, and hang them on a hook.

Phones – Think about the number of times you touch your phone, place it to your ear, or set it down somewhere. Now think about the last time you gave it a thorough cleaning. Was it the 12th of never? You’re not alone. Use an alcohol wipe (being careful not to get any liquid in the phone’s openings) or invest in a UV phone sanitizer.

Remotes – Television remotes are among the dirtiest things in the house. But what about remotes that control other things, like your ceiling fan, gas fireplace, or even your garage door opener? Clean all remotes and openers with alcohol-based wipes.

Toothbrushes – No, the act of brushing your teeth does not clean your toothbrush! Be sure to wash your hands before brushing or flossing, and always rinse your toothbrush after brushing. For storage, use a toothbrush holder to stand it upright so the bristles will dry faster. To disinfect your toothbrush after a bout of illness, dissolve two teaspoons of baking soda in a cup of water and soak the brush head overnight.

Fitness Equipment and Accessories – Even if you’re not sharing your fitness equipment, regularly wipe down dumbbells, yoga mats, weight benches, and other equipment with a disinfectant spray to banish foul odors and kill off germs and bacteria.
